General USB Install

For normal installation of the USB modem, follow these steps:

1. Insert the CD that came with the cable modem into your PC, and close any auto-run screens.

2. Connect one end of the USB cable to the cable modem.

3. Connect the other end of the USB cable to your PC.

4. The "Add New Hardware Wizard" should appear indicating that Windows has detected a new device.

5. Verify that the name of the device represents the cable modem. Some modems will initially show "Composite Device", and then click "Next".

6. The wizard will ask: "What do you want Windows to do?" Select "Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended)", and then click "Next".

7. Next, the wizard will display various locations in which Windows can search for the driver. Select "CD" and then click "Next".

8. The Wizard will search the location for a compatible driver. If the Wizard has detected "Composite Device" before, it will now be renamed to something relating to the cable modem (i.e. Touchstone Cable Modem). It will also show the location of the driver that was found. The path should be a location on the CD, not a Windows directory.

9. Click "Next", and then "Finish" if the driver was successfully installed.

General USB Install Troubleshooting:

If you are having problems installing the USB modem, try the following:

1. Open the "Device Manager" by following the steps below:

- Click on "Start"
- Click on "Control Panel" or ("Settings", "Control Panel")
- Click on "System"
- If you are using Windows 2000 or XP, click on the "Hardware" tab at the top of this window, and then click on "Device Manager".

2. Locate the modem under "Other Devices" and delete it. Make sure there are not multiple instances of it; delete all that are there. Verify that the category of "Other Devices" is no longer on the list.

3. Click on the "+" next to the category of "Universal Serial Bus Controllers". If there is a "USB Composite Device" listed, delete it.

4. Close all windows.

5. Insert the cable modem CD and close any auto-run windows that may open.

6. Unplug the USB connection from the back of your PC (not the modem)

7. Shut down (not re-start) your PC.

8. Plug the USB back into the computer.

9. Re-boot your PC.

10. Follow the General USB Install Instructions listed in the above section.
