The easiest way to connect your Wii console online using your wireless router is through the "Search for an Access Point" function of the Wii console. This method is highly recommended.

Search for an Access Point

1. On the Wii console's main menu, click on the "Wii button" in the lower left corner.

 

 

2. This will take you to the settings screen. On this screen, click on "Wii Settings".

 

 

3. In the "Wii System Settings", click on the blue arrow on the right to reach the second screen of options. On this screen, click the "Internet" button.

 

 

4. Select "Connection Settings".

 

 

5. Select an open connection, indicated by "None", as shown:

 

 

6. Select "Wireless Connection".

 

 

7. Select "Search for an Access Point".

 

 

8. At this point, the Wii console will search for any identifiable Access Points nearby. Once this search as completed, you will be direct to choose the Access Point that you wish to connect to, as shown. Click "OK" to display the list of available Access Points.

 

 

9. Select your Access Point from the list of available Access Points. If your Access Point is not displayed, contact your wireless router manufacturer for support.

If your connection appears as a closed padlock, as shown below on the connections labeled as "Internet 3" and "Internet 4", then the Access Point requires a security code or pass phrase. The security code or pass phrase can usually be found on the security tab of your wireless router settings. If you do not know the security code or pass phrase and do not know how to login to your router to get it, contact your wireless router manufacturer for support.

If your connection signal appears yellow or red, the stability or strength of the connection is not optimal, contact your wireless router manufacturer for support.

 

 

10. Click "Save" followed by "OK" to save your connection settings.

 

 

11. Select OK again to start an automatic connection test.

 

 

Once the test succeeds, Internet setup is complete and your Wii console is wirelessly connected.

 

Manual Setup

Note: Manual Setup is for those users who have a unique home network set up. Most people will not need to use this process; only those who need to specify their primary and secondary DNS, or have static IPs assigned to their wireless router should have to use this setup process. Unless you know for sure, it is highly recommended that you try the "Search for an Access Point" feature first.

1. On the Wii console's main menu, click on the "Wii button" in the lower left corner.

 

 

2. This will take you to the settings screen. On this screen, click on "Wii Settings".

 

 

3. In the Wii System Settings, click on the blue arrow on the right to reach the second screen of options. On this screen, click the "Internet" button.

 

 

4. Select "Connection Settings".

 

 

5. Select an open connection, which is indicated by "None", as shown:

 

 

6. Select "Wireless Connection".

 

7. Select "Manual Setup".

 

 

8. The following screens illustrate how to input settings from your PC or router to establish a connection. The screens can be accessed by clicking the blue arrows on the sides of the screen.

SSID

Your SSID or Service Set Identifier is a sequence of up to 32 letters or numbers that has been assigned to the Access Point of your wireless network, and acts as the name of your wireless network. If you know your SSID, enter it exactly as it appears in your settings of your router. If you are unable to locate your SSID contact the manufacturer of the router.

 

 

Type of Security

WEP, which stands for Wired Equivalency Privacy, and WPA, which stands for WiFi Protected Access, are two types of security settings used by wireless routers to protect networks.

Depending on how your wireless network is configured, you may need to set your Wii console to use either WEP or WPA security -- or disable WEP or WPA on your router -- to use the Wii console at this Access Point.

If your wireless router is not using WEP or WPA, you can skip to step 9.

If you are using WEP or WPA, you'll need to enter the "Key", or pass phrase, used for securely accessing your Access Point.

The next two screens illustrate how to set a specific IP address on the Wii console system.

 

 

 

Setting Static IP and/or Static DNS

If you do not already know this information you will need to contact your wireless router manufacturer.

MTU Value

MTU, or Maximum Transmission Unit, specifies the largest unit of data that can sent over the network. While this setting is not generally required for the Wii console to communicate with a wireless network, if you are having trouble connecting or maintaining a connection, setting this value to "1500" may help.

 

 

9. Click "Save" followed by "OK" to save your connection settings.

 

 

10. Select "OK" again to start an automatic connection test.

 

 

Once the test succeeds, Internet setup is complete and your Wii console is wirelessly connected!
